Waco has served as the host city for numerous Big 12 and NCAA championships.

Waco is home to Baylor University. The Lady Bears Basketball team won the national championship in 2005, and the Baylor men's tennis team won the national championship in 2004.

Baylor track stars Jeremy Wariner, Darold Williamson and Michael Johnson have made the "Green and Gold" truly gold.
Baylor graduate Michael Johnson holds world records in the 200 m, 400 m and 4 x 400 m relay. He won five Olympic gold medals and was world champion nine times. He was the first man to win both the 200 m and 400 m at the same Olympics. He accomplished this at the 1996 Summer Olympics. For these reasons, many believe Johnson to be among the greatest athletes of all time.
