Waco is home to more than 200 places of worship representing more than 30 denominations and multiple faiths.
LONG HISTORY
Among the earliest churches to be established in McLennan County were the Baptist and Methodist. The peaceful cohabitation of these two faiths was evident when members of the Baptist church met at the Methodist church, built in 1850, while their building was under construction.
The Baptist church was completed in 1851, and both have remained strong forces for more than a century and a half. Episcopal services were held in Waco as early as 1854 and many other faiths followed, including Presbyterian, Catholic and Jewish, as the influx of immigrants to the area brought people from different backgrounds.
While many Waco churches have deep roots, new contemporary denominations continue to develop offering a palate of worship experiences. From the traditional to contemporary, and even a church under the Interstate 35 bridge for the homeless, Waco’s community of faith is strong and ever-growing.
