Caterpillar Inc. has announced that it plans to add a precision manufacturing center for additional work tool production at the company’s Waco campus. The new facility will encompass 75,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space and is expected to begin operations in early 2011. Work tools are attachments used on a wide variety of Cat machines. The production of these new work tools requires specialized manufacturing methods in a controlled environment, including precision machining, heat-treating and assembly and testing.

2009-11-20 Unemployment drops in Waco area
The Texas Workforce Commission reported today that the Waco MSA experienced a drop in unemployment rate for the month of October to 6.9 percent. The area added a net 400 jobs from September to October, while the entire labor force grew also. The Waco MSA continues to maintain a lower unemployment compared to the state of Texas (8.1%) and the country (9.5%).

(AUSTIN) -- The Texas Transportation Commission today approved staff recommendations for widening Interstate 35 in McLennan, Hill, and Bell counties through bond proceeds approved by Texas voters in 2007. Rep. Charles "Doc" Anderson, R-Waco, hailed the vote as "critical step to improve the safety, mobility, and economic vitality of McLennan County, Central Texas, and the entire state which depends on a safe 'Main Street of Texas'."

On-line registration for the 10th annual Starburst Junior Golf Tournament begins at 8 a.m. (CST) on Feb. 14. More than 1,000 junior golfers will be accepted into the 2008 tournament. The 10th annual Starburst Junior Golf Classic will be June 9-11 at seven area golf courses. The three-day tournament is open to all boy and girl junior golfers ages 7 to 18. Debbie Brister of Paradise City won $2,500 in the Time Warner Cable Golf Ball Drop June 12 at the ninth annual Starburst Junior Golf Classic. Some 1,500 numbered golf balls were dropped from a helicopter at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course, the home base course for the second largest junior golf tournament in the world. The event was part of the three-day tournament that included more than 1,000 players ages 7 through 18.

The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce joined the Heart of Texas Builders Association, Keep Waco Beautiful, Texas Department of Transportation and the City of Waco March 7 to reveal the new Waco sign on Interstate 35. The community identifier and entry sign has been made possible through the partnership of these groups. The 40-foot-by-10-foot sign constructed of white Austin stone and cast concrete is located at exit 335 at Forrest Lane on the southbound side of the interstate.
