The Starburst Junior Golf Classic is now the world’s largest youth tournament with 1050 players registered for the 2009 event. “While our goal has always been to be the best junior golf tournament, being the largest is a significant milestone and one we are proud of,” said Steve Smith, senior vice president of sports and special events for the Greater Waco Chamber and tournament director. “Our team of volunteers has worked hard to make Starburst a first-class event.” This is 11th year for the tournament, which will be played June 15-17 on seven area courses in and around Waco, Texas. Starburst is open to all boy and girl junior golfers ages 7 to 18. Players from 11 states and Mexico will participate in this year’s event. Registration begins in February each year with many divisions filling immediately. “We realize each year at registration time the draw we have for top notch youth golfers. Many of these players are among the best in the country. We’ve seen Starburst champions go on to win other tournaments and earn college scholarships,” said Smith.
AJGA exemptions apply to the Starburst championship divisions.
Special events at this year’s tournament include the Titleist golf demo June 15 and the Time Warner Helicopter Golf Ball Drop June 16. Both events will be at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course, the tournament’s home course. “We want to thank our sponsors and golf course personnel who make this event possible and allow us to deliver a professional level experience for these junior golfers,” said Smith. Mars Snackfood US is the presenting sponsor under the Starburst brand. The Snickers and Skittles brands also are sponsors. Adidas and Titleist are apparel sponsors. The event is organized by the Greater Waco Chamber and supported by the City of Waco. Rosati’s, Outback and Fuddrucker’s are food sponsors. Drinks are provided by Dr Pepper. Other sponsors are Greg May Honda, AT&T, McLennan Community College, Transgraphics, Time Warner Cable and Scott & White Hospital.
